Army Center for UAS Propulsion Outreach Program

The Army Center for UAS Propulsion is seeking for a team of high school junior or senior students to build an outreach program targeted at middle to high school students (rising 7th to 9th) in the summer of 2023. The team will be expected to assemble and execute an educational program in aerospace propulsion technologies suitable for middle to high school students (rising 7th to 9th) through a one week summer internship.

Timeframe: Outreach efforts will happen between July 17-21 (Chicago). Preparation will happen prior to this for about 4-5 days during the summer (after June 1).

Qualifications: Rising or current senior/junior in high school with current GPA exceeding 3.5. Must have basic course in high school physics and calculus.

Expectations: The outreach team will be expected to develop educational outreach content in collaboration with graduate students at the Center for UAS Propulsion. The student team will execute this program towards local or extended area middle school underrepresented students near end of summer or early Fall 2023 semester.

How to Apply: Please send a brief bio explaining who you are and why you might be interested/qualified in building an inclusive educational outreach program for middle/high school students to cup@illinois.edu. Please include a list of science and math courses you have taken in high school along with your current school GPA.

Honorarium: A $150 honorarium will be provided in addition to all resources required in the outreach program.

ARL Center for UAS Propulsion (CUP) Summer Undergraduate Internship 2022

We are looking for motivated undergraduate summer interns to work within the ARL Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Propulsion (CUP) in 2022. The students will be working at the ARL Center for UAS Propulsion within the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or one of the other satellite locations.

Center for UAS Propulsion 3rd Workshop 2021

Center for UAS Propulsion Program Review & Workshop 2020

Please join us on the second CUP Program Review and Workshop at the Northwestern University on November 17-18, 2020. CUP leads research focused on discovery, innovation, and transition of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) propulsion technologies to enable unmatched, enduring power for maneuver and mobility. The aim of the center is to address U.S. Army needs for current and future advances in UAS propulsion systems in the following 4 areas:

  • Reliability: reliable operational cycles over extended periods
  • Payload: increase power density to facilitate additional electronics, cargo and sensor packages
  • Signatures: decrease in detection by opposing parties
  • Range: increased operational range

Center for UAS Propulsion Industry-Academia Connection Days (workshop) 2019 – Press Release

The first workshop for the Center for UAS propulsion (CUP) took place on May 1-May 2, 2019 at the University of Illinois Chicago. The first Industry-Academia Connection Days event for the Center saw representatives from industry, government labs, academia, gathered together to share ideas and form a roadmap for development of next generation UAS propulsion units. Dr. Jaret Riddick (ARL VTD Director), and Dr. Mike Kweon (VTD Propulsion Chief) were on hand to participate in the discussion sessions in terms of both technology and development and to reiterate the importance of building an industry base can be established in the US to support these efforts. Principal investigators from the CUP research partners as well as distinguished scientists and industry pioneers actively participated in the workshop discussions.

ARL Central Propulsion Meetings held at Universities & Argonne Labs

During the week of October 15th and 22nd, Dr. Mark Tschopp (ARL-Central Regional Lead) and Dr. Mike Kweon (ARL VTD Propulsion Division Chief) held meetings with University researchers and research staff at Argonne National Laboratory to discuss future of propulsion research at ARL-Central as well as efforts to stand up CUP (Center for UAS Propulsion Systems). The Universities included University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Illinois Chicago, and Northwestern University. Meetings were held at the respective Universities and and at Argonne National Laboratory. ARL-Central already has over 20 faculty and student hires as part of ARL Central in diverse fields such as Propulsion, fuels, materials, and acoustics.
